Music to Eat Chocolate By

By Stephanie Feuer

Because the pleasure of flavor can be enhanced by engaging other senses, Galaxy Chocolate commissioned a soundtrack for eating chocolate. Dr Natalie Hyacinth, a composer, sound expert and academic at the University of Bristol, UK was commissioned to create music to heighten the sensory experience of eating chocolate.

To create “The Sweetest Song,” Hyacinth says she “looked at particular sonic qualities: pitch, tempo and harmony. The more regulated the music is the sweeter it can taste.”

The music is just over a minute long, approximating the same amount of time it takes for a piece of chocolate to melt in the mouth - approximately 64–90 seconds. It features a high pitch piano melody accented by harp and strings to add a smooth texture. The rhythm, 78 bpm, was chosen to emphasise creaminess.
